Best Show I Ever Saw

(orig published Wednesday, April 7, 2010)

My wife Adrienne is good at making plans. I am not. This has worked out well for both of us, mostly. I spent most of 1979 transitioning from 14 to 15 years old. While I was going everywhere on my bicycle and learning how to shave with a razor, she was creating her life plan: Have children when young, then go back to school and get advanced degrees, ending up teaching college as a tenured professor. By 2006, the children were living independent lives and she had her Master's Degree. It was time. After much searching, she was accepted into the new Gerontology PhD program at Miami University, my alma mater.

Now was the hard part. Miami University was nearly a thousand miles away from our home in Shoreham, Vermont. And Adrienne had certain conditions she wanted fulfilled before starting the last leg of her journey: to not have to work full-time while studying, to live near her school, not be a long-distance learner, and to have me with her. These were big, scary conditions but I had always had complete faith in her. When she told me she wanted me to come with her, I said, "Sure."

Monday's Blahs

I cancelled last Monday's physical therapy appointment because I was not feeling well.  Exhaustion from a busy weekend, four hours a day driving, then whirlwind visiting with my family coupled with only a few hours sleep the night before left me with a couple of painful cold sores and the sniffles.  There is also a buzzing sound in my ears and objects seem to sport a lightly radiating gloriole  around them.

I hope they won't charge  for the missed appointment.  Which askes the question, am I really too ill to go or am I playing hookey?  I feel guilty about choosing to stay home.  In my heart, I should have gone and just been sick.  It will be my fault if I will have to pay for this out of my own pocket.  I should never have gotten sick.  It is my own fault.  I should have...

Monday's update

As always,  my appointment with Dr. Boughaba had an anxiety relieving effect.  I consiuder myself very fortunate to have found her.  We talked about finding a new neurologist in Statesboro and she is willing to help with the search.  That was a big relief because I hadn't been able to find any neurologists there that specialized in CIDP like she does.

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy is not a progressive illness, it is an intermittent condition.    She was concerned that I might be having a flare up when I told her about feeling more fatigued lately and off balance more.  She proposed extra IVIg treatments for now.

Continuity of Care

Monday, January 17, 2011 09:04:24 PM

We made it to church yesterday.  I kept falling asleep; at one point Adrienne woke me up because I began to snore...

I haven't been writing much lately, not because I haven't anything to say, but because I have been too busy sleeping my life away. No matter how much sleep I get, it isn't enough. After church, I ate lunch then took a five hour nap. Then came dinner and off to bed I went.

I don't know what makes a good or bad physical or occupational therapist, but I always felt I had competent, if not excellent ones and I was fortunate to have them. And there have been plenty.  I had both kinds of therapists at University Hospital, a plethora of therapists at the Drake Center, and then throughout the summer, a succession of physical and occupational therapists came to my house.  I have had fifteen different therapists.

Knowledge to carry it out blues

Tuesday, December 28, 2010 10:47 AM

This is the last day of 2010 and I do not intend to reflect on the year past searching for clues and encouragement to face the year ahead. 2010 was a pretty turbulent year for me and I am looking forward to seeing it disappear my rear view mirror.

Not that it was all bad; to be truthful, the good far outweighs the bad. There was plenty of change for me and change is almost always a painful experience. Anyone who has quit smoking or some other deeply ingrained behavior knows this. At least with smoking or eating, there is some sort of physical record. I can see myself cadging a cigarette from my neighbor or eating peanut butter out of the jar at midnight to know that I have not given up smoking or grazing.

Merry Christmas!

Saturday, December 25, 2010 9:15 pm

Nothing says Christmas! like a trip to the emergency room.

I am a little light headed now, it has been a busy couple of days.

It has been heart warming to hear about everyone's Christmas.  We got hit by the flu bug-me the hardest.    After a long night of vomiting and diarrhea, I woke up this morning unable to move.  Very scary!

Because of the auto-immune issue, they admitted me to the hospital.  The good news is I don't have an infection.  But wow, I have never felt as sick as I did last night and today.

It is eerie how comfortable I've gotten with the way things get done in hospitals.  What a strange year it has been.
